             I think most people get pierced for the style, but I do have clients that do them for the pain. .

             Self-Mutilation behavior is thought to be a way to soothe anxiety. Endorphins are hormones released that calms down the body. Endorphins are neuro chemicals that have been referred to as the bodies own form of opium. Self inflicted pain actually releases more endorphins. So the more you mutilate, the more the chemical you get, and the more you calm down. So again piercing is not an illness.
             To be unique, many people pierce as a form of body art that denotes self-expression.
