The mount was cleaned and sprayed to let the puck be removed easily from the machine. The sample was slowly lowered into the machine. Then about 2/3 scoop of the phenolic power was poured in twith the sample into the well of the machine. .
5.The cap was put into the machine and was set for 1minute 90seconds at 150°C with a pressure of 4200psi. The puck was removed and then grinded some more on the Samplemet 2 to prepare the puck for the polishing process. The HandiMet II was used to sand the encapsulated sample to a fine finish over the different grades of sand paper on the machine using a 90 degree angle until there was no scratches on the surface of the rebar.
6.The puck was then polished using the #3 grade polish on the polishing machine in the lab and rinsed with water.
Then using the finer #1 grade polish the rebar was then polished to a mirror finish and rinsed with water. Then after checking for any scratches that could be seen with the naked eye and possibly polishing some more. The puck was the put into a solution of acid to be etched after getting the approval of the instructor. The etching will allow for the grain structure of the rebar to be seen under the metallograph.
7.The puck was then analyze under the metallograph at 100k to examine the grain structure of the normalized rebar sample. The best pictures of the sample normalized rebar sample were saved to disk.
8.The next samples to be analyzed; annealed rebar which had been heated and then cooled slowly, hardened rebar this was heated in the furnace and then quenched quickly in an icebath, and the last one the hot rolled piece of rebar.
9.The class was then put into three different groups to analyze each sample and repeat the previous procedure on each one. Then save the pictures on the metallograph.
