Rediscovering Discovery Learning

Class meeting involve the teacher and individual class members. A lot of teachers choose to join the kids in a circle and talk about a variety of subjects. This lets the kids talk in front of their classmates and help them grow confidence to participate. One of the last examples of warm-ups is working simple problems in rapid-fire order. The teacher quickly presents a question and the kids answer the question as fast as possible. The teacher keeps going until someone or group answers the question wrong, then they start over. This helps the kids think quickly and hopefully help them get ready for tests.
Student Questions is another one of the methods used in the classroom. The teacher is free game to any question the kids have, usually relative to the subject they are studying but not always. The kids can ask the question then the teacher will give them an answer or look it up if they don't know the answer. This can be used for a review for a test or exam, or even at the end of the week to debrief. The students soon learn that they have complete control and feel more comfortable to ask in front of class.
Examples and Non-examples is a list of examples and corresponding non-examples that can usually be identified in advance with what the kids are learning. This can help the kids understand the concept the teacher is trying to teach. The teacher will give the kids and example of some thing that is wrong and then something that is correct. The kids will then have to decide which is which. This helps the kids think critically.
Class discussion is very similar to one of the warm up when the class can ask questions. During class discussion the teacher brings up a topic and then the kids will get to voice there opinions on the subject or even ask the teacher questions. This could be a great tool of teaching if everyone is involved but in most cases everyone doesn't feel the need to voice there opinion.
