development for treatment of various cancers.
2. To stimulate and foster pharmacologic profiling of new agents to assess the.
relationships among drug exposures, target interactions, and anticancer effects.
3. To promote and cultivate collaborative interactions between basic and clinical.
researchers to translate findings of promising drugs to the clinical setting.
4. To demonstrate that our new therapeutic approaches lead to improvements in.
patient response and survival in Phase II and Phase III trials" (www.Karmanos.org/we/research/developmental/,1).
Molecular Biology & Genetics.
Because the causes of cancer have been traced back to genetics, much of the research at Karmanos is being done in molecular biology and genetics. Now that the human genome has been mapped, genetic research is advancing rapidly. As the research in this area becomes more and more advanced, it will become much easier to fight cancer at the genetic level. It will also become easier to target genes that lead to cancer and start treatment much earlier. "This Program focuses on two major themes that center on a series of interrelated goals:.
Mechanisms of action of cancer predisposition genes and/or genetic penetrance genes in familial cancers.
Mechanisms of dysregulation of gene expression and cell cycle control in cancer induction, progression, and metastasis."(www.karmanos.org/we/research/molecular, 2).
Population Studies & Prevention.
The researchers in population studies and prevention are focusing on three main areas: etiology studies, cancer prevention, and community-based research. The etiology area main goal is to study the causes of cancers that occur in the population of the metro Detroit area. They do this through population-based studies. These studies fall into two categories: environmental exposures and genetic studies. The environmental exposures studies look at environmental factors that can lead to cancer.
