It can be said that the alien goes through the three stages of the Oedipus complex. It is born blind, gains pleasure from killing / feeding and finally matures when he kills Lambert. In this scene the Alien does not kill Lambert straight away like it does with all of the other crew members. He slides his tail up Lamberts leg towards her torso. What is more striking is the fact that for the first time, you see the Alien standing fully erect. Lamberts screams can be heard by Ripley and it is obvious that he isn't killing her as efficiently as the other crew members as the Alien is grunting in a very sexual manner. This suggests that the Alien is not only killing Lambert, but also satisfying his sexual desire. If this is the case this completes his journey to maturity from the blind enfant stage to the fully grown almost pubescent Alien.
This also emphasises the fact that the Alien portrays the id, just running on unconscious desires.
In the closing scenes where the alien is in the escape ship, Ripley first encounters the Alien sleeping, his mouth opens, arms fall and tongue extends. In my opinion the Alien is having what could only be described as a sexual dream which makes sense as this follows the scene where the alien kills Lambert.
When Ripley and the Alien confront each other it is sexually charged, Ripley is at first half naked as she struggles to get into a suit. She grunts in a way not to dissimilar to the way the Alien does and ironically kills the alien by penetrating it with a spear.
If you are looking at possible phallic symbols represented by the alien then the Alien could have multiple meanings, it could represent the masculine side of Ripley, or masculinity in general as it appears to be the dominant species, but what comes across most noticeably that the Alien itself is a phallus, the Alien's head is shaped much like a penis, also the Alien's mouth thrusts once gain much like a penis, this statement also ties in with the way that Lambert died, as it could be argued that she was raped to death.
