Socrates

Athenian philosopher, Socrates has emerged as one of the most influential individuals of modern thought and has played a large role in molding the way that many societies view a majority of the established principles of modern life. His ideas involving spiritual matters, the soul, individual enlightenment, and the truth are still very much practiced today. The amount of influence that Socrates has on a society depends on where that society is located as well as the type of government, leadership, and religion. Those areas that are affected by the challenge of Socratic thought may be provided with spiritual and democratic progress. However, Socrates has not been seen by everyone as a positive character, especially by the Athenian leaders of his time. .
Socrates was born in a time when challenging existing principles was a very dangerous proposition. In his younger years he followed in the footsteps of his father and became a sculptor until he left to fight in the Peloponnesian War. When Socrates returned to Greece after the war he decided to end his previous profession and become a philosophical speaker. As a debater he quickly gained popularity and attracted a large following. One reason why the following was so great in size was because he would not accept money for his works and debates, and also the young people of Athens admired and respected him. Unfortunately, Socrates was practicing his beliefs during a very vulnerable time period in Athens. After the Peloponnesian War and Spartan occupation of Athens their main concern was to restore social and political stability and support for the new administration. At this time it was felt that intellectuals were weakening Athenian society by undermining its traditional views and values. .
The main charges that Socrates was convicted of were impiety toward the state, corrupting the youth of Athens, and disrespecting the gods.
