The South became the North of the Civil War. Southeast Florida has no ties to what is known as the Deep South. .
South East Florida is made up of four counties, Broward, Miami-Dade, Monroe and Palm Beach. It is a region of the state that was populated by snowbirds from he Northern states of the country to retirement communities in Palm Beach County. Jeffrey Toobin has very well described the population of the Palm Beach County in a couple of sentences: .
The towns of Palm Beach and Belle Glade have evolved little over the years, but the rest of the county has been transformed. Retires from the North, many of them Jewish, have been the chief engines of change as they filled vast condominium complexes in Boca Raton, and elsewhere, bringing their mostly Democratic politics with them. Twelve thousand people live in one development alone, century Village. Thanks largely to these senior citizens, and the businesses that sprang up to serve them, the population of the county has doubled since 1980 (Toobin, 80).
It is a county of senior citizens and faithful democrats who have played a tremendous role in the last couple of political elections at a state and national level. One of the most controversial elections in United States History was the presidential election of 2000.
Monroe County is made up by a series of keys which according to the definition by The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition, implies that they are a chain of small coral and limestone islands and reefs extending about 241 km (150 mi) in a southwestward arc from south of Miami to Key West. The Keys are popular tourist resorts noted for their fishing and tropical vegetation. Key Largo has been described as the dive capital of the world while Key West is better known for the tropical atmosphere but shares the same economy of tourism. .
Broward County, in South Florida is the second most populous county in Florida (Vogel, 27).
