Jesse James


His raids were well planned and left little to chance. Jesse James was quite proficient and successful in bank robberies, stage coach robberies, and train robberies ("Jesse James, Train Robberies, Confederate"). The best of Jesse James activities had taken place throughout Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, Texas, Kentucky, and Minnesota.
             After the Civil War, Jesse was wounded while he was surrendering. Within a year after, Jesse was believed to have pulled off the first daylight bank robbery in peacetime. He made off with $60,000 from the Liberty, Missouri bank not far from his home ("Jesse James"). The robbery involved eleven men on horseback. Although the robbery was a success, one by-stander was killed as Jesse's gang stormed out of the bank firing their pistols, who actually shot the man, has yet to be proven.
             For his next successful holdup his gang went to Russellville, Kentucky. At the time of this robbery Jesse was only nineteen, but his years in the Civil War taught him all he needed to know about being an outlaw or to say rebel. His gang had reportedly made off with 20,000 dollars.

             Along with victories, there will be failures. One of these unsuccessful attempts happened in Lexington, Missouri. Though none of Jesse's gang was injured, Jesse and .
             the gang hit the bank thinking there would be a stash of money and bonds inside, unfortunately they only made out with a couple hundred dollars. With all of the attention Jesse was getting, he attracted a lot of fans as well as enemies. Along with the government, bank owners soon enlisted the help of Allen Pinkerton, who established the first protection agency. It was called the Pinkerton National Detective Agency ("Jesse James"). The men in this agency were known as Pinkertons. But Jesse still managed to elude them as well. The Pinkertons wanted Jesse James and his gang very badly.
             Getting tired of robbing banks, Jesse decided to start robbing trains.
