The Pearl

The Pearl, written by John Steinback, is about a native family from La Paz, Mexico. It begins where Kino awakes, hearing the Song of the Family, and looks on to his peaceful wife, Juana. After eating breakfast Kino sees a scorpion on his son Coyotito's cradle. Just as he was going to capture the scorpion it stung the baby. Hearing all the crying, Juan Thomas, Kinos brother, and his fat wife Apalonia arrive at the brush house. They are told to find a doctor but when they arrive without the doctor, Kino and his wife decide to go straight to the doctor. When they finally arrive at the doctor's house, the doctor's servant says the doctor wasn't there, the real reason being because they had no money. Out of anger and frustration Kino hit the gate cutting his knuckles. The next day the go fishing for pearls and kinofinds a huge one. The news travels fast and soon the doctor arrives at their door. The baby seemed to have been cured from the poultice his mother had put on him but the doctor said it was just temporary. He gave the baby a capsule and said he's return in an hour. When he arrived the baby was worse. Kino told him he would pay after he sold his pearl and the doctor noticed he had hidden it in the ground. That very same night someone broke into their house and was going to steal the pearl. They could never sell the pearl for how much they thought it was worth so they went away. On their journey they were being followed by trackers. At the end they hid in a cave and juana waited with coyotito for Kino to attact the trackers. While Kino was making his way down to the trackers, the baby started crying. The trackers thought it was a coyote and shot at the cave, killing the baby.
