The Coverdell ESA And Education Credits

gov). The account must be designated as an Education IRA when it is created in order to be treated as an Education IRA for tax purposes. In 2001, the Education IRA was renamed to the Coverdell Education Savings Account (or "Coverdell ESA"), named after late U.S. Senator Paul Coverdell of Georgia, as it is now considered a savings account instead of an individual retirement account.
There are certain eligibility requirements that must be met in order to establish and maintain a Coverdell ESA. The account must be established for the benefit of a child (designated beneficiary) under the age of 18. Contributions to the account will not be accepted after the designated beneficiary reaches his or her 18th birthday, unless the beneficiary is a "special needs beneficiary". However, anyone can set up an account for their child, including corporations and other entities. If the child chooses not to attend college, the balance can be transferred to another member of the family. Furthermore, the contribution limit is based on the child, not the number of accounts set up in his or her name. Even if the child's grandparents, uncles and aunts, and godparents set up Education IRAs for the child, the amount of money put away each year cannot, in total, exceed $2000. Like most tax-protected accounts, there are income limits that apply to your eligibility for making use of them. For single people, the amount a person can save phases out when adjusted gross income (AGI) is between $95,000 and $110,000. If a person's income is higher than $110,000, they are not eligible to contribute to a Coverdell ESA. These rates are double for people who are married and filing joint returns.
Earnings and distributions from a Coverdell ESA are tax- and penalty-free, provided the funds are used for qualified elementary, secondary or higher education expenses and the amount of the withdrawal does not exceed the child's education expenses for that year.
