Deep River

During the whole time spent between these two you sort of get the feeling that even though Otsu is the outcast, Mitsuko is is a little bit jealous of him. That is why she is so mean yto him and in one way or another intrigued by Otsu.
Otsu is later described in the book but since he is so intertwined with Mitsuko I will talk about him now. Like I said previously, he is the outcast with a great belief in the Chritian faith. Hre later goes on to become a priest but is later ostracized by the Catholic Church because of his belief in many religions. This was unacceptable at this time. He is later found in India where he had been talen in by the Hindus and presides in an ashram. There he is one of them and goes along everyday picking up the dead or dieing people up from the streets and bringing them to the Ganges River. The most appealing thing about this character is his reference to God as his onion. This is a good analogy in that God has so many forms and klayers as does an onion.
Next we read about a character named Numada. We read about his childhood experiences. Growing up he had a dog in which he found named blackie in which he confided all his most precious thoughts to. He felt that blackie would talk back to him. He does this to escape the fact of the obvious hurt that gets built up inside of him due to the fact of his parents always fighting. Eventually his mom decides to leave and take him with her and Numada is forced to leave blackie behind. It is because of this experience we learn that Numada write's children literature. Later in life he inherits a hornbill bird that he also begins to confide in. He then finds out that he has tuberculosis and must be hospitalized. He must give up his bird. He feels empty inside and later on his wife brings him in a maya. Once again he is in some way comforted by the presence of an animal to confide in. Numada then goes in for surgery and upon recovering he finds out that his bird had died.
