Medea


            Medea; heartless, cruel, malicious, ferocious, wild, angry, brutal. I could be here forever, describing her ill-fated personality traits However, the one word used to describe her, which really stands out, is evil. In four simple letters, the word sums up her retaliations effectively.
             While she may have had her heart broken countless times, with Jason's betrayal and his cowardice in relationships - her vengeance is beyond forgiveness. .
             Children are seen as the weak, fragile, most vulnerable in our society along with the elderly. You hurt them, and the majority, providing it is a moral society, will be outraged. As will those with sentimental, emotional and blood connections with them.
             Medea, the crafty sorceress she was, remained well aware of this fact. So, as retribution for Jason's act, she cold-bloodedly committed the pre-meditated murders of her two sons.

             It is important to Euripides" piece of literature because it emphasises the main themes: vengeance, fear, the desperation of love .
             This part of the play may well be the reason why we are still studying the script some thousands of years after it was written. Infact, people were outraged in 431 BC when the playwright showed a performance which included the protagonist as a powerful, dominating woman, who had the nerve to kill her sons. However, this may just be the reason why Medea has been such a success- the plot is relevant to our society, it challenges the views of many people, and it is capable of grasping people's attention.
             Euripides wants us to get angry at Medea at this exact point in the play. As a dramatic playwright, he managed to do this very successfully as people were outraged upon watching this play performed in the open air amphitheatres of Greece. This scene is probably the turning point for those who felt sorry for Medea- for them to suddenly feel anger towards her.
