The Rise And Fall Of The Boston Mafia

When three men were sticking up the office crap games and bookies, Lombardo sent out word that he wanted them all caught alive. A bookie is a person who takes illegal bets for money and is very big in the mob scene, past and present. The men, Angie DeMarco, Joe Semenza, and Tony Pomo were recognized when they robbed a numbers place in the North End. Lombardo gave word to Semenza who he had known his entire life that someone had to die. "If anything like this happens again, nobody gets saved." (Lombardo, TheBostonMafia.com).
Tony Pomo was killed in a North End apartment by Cortese, Semenza, and DeMarco. His bloodied body was wrapped up in sheets and dumped in the Boston Harbor. A coastguardsman had seen the men dump the body and alerted the police. They were arrested and their charges for murder were somehow lowered to manslaughter. This just showed how much control the mafia had in Boston. After prison, DeMarco went back to sticking up bookies and Semenza pleaded with him, reminding him of Lombardo's warning. On November 12, 1959, Angie DeMarco's body was found in an Everett, Massachusetts dump, shot six times in the head.
"Being a bookie was the dumbest thing I ever did. But if you didn't do what those people told you to do or if you refused to do your job they would come after you and possibly your family and I wasn't risking that. I tried to keep it from your grandmother (his mother) for twenty-five years. When your name shows up in the newspapers though, everyone knows what you do. I missed the birth of Nicolette (his daughter) and even her wedding because I was doing time in prison over so many years. It was no game back then." (Marquardo, Personal Interview) In the 1950s Buccola decided he had enough of the mob life and returned to Sicily. Joe Lomabardo also decided to shut down all his gambling for the time being. When word got out about Lombardo shutting down the gambling, a small time mobster had a bright idea.
