The Tale Of A Student's Life

"Is it so bad, for him, that he"d take the risk of coming to my room at night? I think of the hanged men, hooked on the Wall" (Tale, 99). Women play tricks on your mind. They make men do things that we would not normally do. In this case it may be a little different because Nick is probably pretty desperate, but nevertheless he is taking a huge risk by kissing her. Even in Offred's previous life before everything went awry, her husband, Luke, dropped his relationship with his previous wife just to be with her. .
Then we get to the Commander. All he wants is a relationship. He has lost all touch with his wife Serena Joy. He just wants to be loved. He wants to grow old with someone, like the song from "The Wedding Singer" says. Furthermore, it seems he has no true understanding of the plight of women. He laughs at Offred's admission that Handmaids put butter on their hands. He does not understand the humiliation of these women, treated like animals, forced to hide scraps of their own dinner, denied the tiniest luxuries. He does not even understand that their rooms are searched, that they live under constant scrutiny and have no privacy whatsoever (Tale, 159). ""I think I"d rather just talk," I say-What would you like to talk about?" "Anything I guess. Well, you for instance."-Oh there's not much to say about me. I"m just an ordinary kind of guy""(Tale, 184). I think that this conversation is a perfect example of how a woman has power over a man. The Commander acts as if he's just an "ordinary guy." Right. This is a major architect in the framework of Gilead and he's acting like a little school boy as soon as Offred shows a little bit of interest in him. This type of behavior is strictly forbidden, but he's acting like it's nothing. .
Another example of the Commander wanting to be in some kind of meaningful relationship is when him and Offred go to the club. "He retains hold of my arm, and as he talks his spine straightens imperceptibly, his chest expands, his voice assumes more and more the sprightliness and jocularity of youth.
