In fact "The story was wrenched out of Gilman's own life- (Afterword to "The Yellow Wallpaper" 123). This is the period when Gilman moved to California (1888), because she separated from her husband Charles Walter Stetson, and 2 years later (1890 -1892) she wrote her novel story "The Yellow Wallpaper". The narrator Charlotte Gilman lived through the depression that was mentioned in the story; she is the women in "The Yellow Wallpaper". She was not a feminist, she wrote in rage. She went to summer vacation home for rest therapy; however, the woman's condition worsens before she divorced from her husband, Charlotte moved to California (1888) to get a rest, but her situation worsens and this could be the motive why she wrote the story "The Yellow Wallpaper". .
In 1894 when the story was published, Charlotte Perkins divorced her husband. Did she feel released, did she found a cure for her depression, and is this the beginning of the rise of feminism as many feminist groups will say to support their ideals, or is it another fogged glass case? That's right, a fogged glass case. No one has looked deeper through the fogged glass case (time and Charlotte's mental state) because no one contradicted the feminists, and so far documents describing opposition to Charlotte Gilman and her pioneer feminist idealism are in minimal numbers.
Only men and women who are weak (majority is the female population) are oppressed and sometimes abused by their wife's, their husbands, the society, etc. People treat one as one will present himself or herself. If people present themselves as a strong, firm to their rights, then there would not be any mistreatment or subjugation. In a case with Charlotte she had a difficult childhood and was angry at her father for leaving her when she was a child. She could have written books to express her anger, her rage, and still not know that she was writing feministic novels and supporting the feminist ideals today.
