Eugene O'Neill

He is an actor who has worked his way up. He started with nothing but became rich and famous, which symbolises the American dream. As a child his father walked out on the family and left the mother alone with her children. James therefore had to work from the age of 10 and later he started acting. At one time he is offered a big role where he earns a lot of money. He plays the same part for a long time and unfortunately James ends up as becoming a "typecast-, where he gets locked in this one role. .
             James likes his whiskey and is hardworking. He says he has never missed a performance and claims therefore that he cannot have a drinking problem. He is in denial, which is a general theme throughout the play. He is furthermore cheap and a miser (nrig). He is very risk shy and buys land for his money instead of stocks, because it is the most secure. He does not trust the stock market. .
             Mary Tyrone: She is 54, comes from a wealthy family and her father was a successful business man. In school she liked to play the piano and wanted to become a none. But she meets James and it was love at first sight. Mary used to be extremely pretty and is still striking but with a worn out look. Her hands are knotted from rheumatism (gigt) and she constantly wrings them nervously. She is a nerve wreck and is always suspicious of everybody. She became addicted to morphine when she gave birth to her youngest son and now she gets the morphine by claiming she has rheumatism. Mary suffers from extreme isolation and has no friends who visits her and she never goes out because of James' anti-social tendencies. This loneliness heightens her anxiety and paranoia because she fills her days with worry and fear. .
             Mary lost her second child and is convinces that Jamie killed it. She left the baby with a caretaker and suspects that Jamie went in the room and contaminated the baby with his illness. Mary and James are always discussing everything.
