A Feminist View On Hamlet

On the other hand, Shakespeare could be showing the stereotypical signs of women: not having the courage and honor to stand up and face their own actions.
When Hamlet looks behind and sees the dead body of Polonius on the ground he thunders out in triumph "I took thee for thy better", representing the aggressive side of the typical male gender. Despite the relationship being mother and son, the typical characteristics of male versus women come out in this passage. Hamlet then directs his bitter words towards his mother depicting her as a soulless person and poses the question if her heart can still be penetrated "if it be made of penetrable stuff" or if it has already hardened and lost its emotions "If damned custom have not brazed it so". Hamlet plays with the fact that his mother may still be this sweet person with a real penetrable heart or if she has become evil, by losing her heart and having no feelings. Hamlet is still not completely convinced that his mother has acted wrong; he still has hope for her. This says a lot about maternal power and how it can be influential. The queen responds again as if she had no idea what he is talking about, that she is completely surprised by the bitterness of his words " wag thy tongue, In noise so rude against me?". It shows that her heart has already hardened and that she has turned into a monster, a lyer, an impure and overly sexualized women. .
Hamlet criticizes his mother for putting on this act, how it shames her, "takes off the rose", and how she is a hypocrite acting like a Mary on the outside, but has growing evil on the inside. Notice how rose is used in reference to the typical caring and loving housewife, the classical Mary characteristics. To further his arguments, he mentions the marriage vows she took with her dead father. He is reminding her that due to her vows she has been cast into the role of Mary the good and excellent mother and how she has lied and turned against him " makes marriage vows, As false dicers"oath".
