Franchising In Korea FSI


These terms were used to describe the government's arrangement which compromising right to others in collecting taxes. This concept of franchising is known to be around since the late 18 century.
             The purpose of this chapter is to provide general understanding on franchising. The discussions of the various definitions will be illustrated initially and a revision on the different types of franchising will be followed.
             2.2 DEFINITION OF FRANCHISING.
             .
             Housden (1984) described that many attempts have been made to define what constitutes franchising. As he suggested, many definitions have been suggested by different authors based on broad range of business, which some are very general and some are very specific. Raab and Matusky (1987) viewed franchising as a form of marketing or distribution of goods or services to the consumer which involves mutual compensation between franchisor and franchisee. Vaughn (1979) defined in more detailed way as he suggested that franchising is a form of marketing or distribution in which a parent company customarily grants an individual or a relatively small company the right, or privilege, to do business in a prescribed manner over a certain period of time in a specific place. This obligation of running business in a prescribed manner is stated in definition by Rosenberg and Bedell (1969) which suggests this obligation empowered by a contract is applied in order to achieve standardisation. On the other hand, definition by Seltz (1982) specifically demonstrates the methods of mutual compensation between two parties: .
             An arrangement whereby the manufacturer or sole distributor of trade-marked product or service gives exclusive rights of local distribution to independent retailers in return for their payment of royalties and conformance to standardised operating procedures. A party granting a right (or franchise) is known as the franchisor, while the recipient is called the franchisee.
