Iago

3.369-371). It is Iago's hatred of Othello and his own insecurities that delude him into taking for fact what he has no idea is true. .
Upon arriving in Cyprus Iago sets into motion his plan to obtain his rightful position as lieutenant. Iago plans for Cassio to become intoxicated and then have Roderigo initiate a fight with him. Cassio then wounds Roderigo as well as stabbing another innocent man only trying to help. Iago knew that an event such as this would lead Othello to dismiss Cassio which he does when he tells him "Cassio, I love thee; / But never more be an officer of mine" (2.3.225-226). In his dismissal of Cassio, Othello has put into effect the second part of Iago's elaborate plan. .
Iago has now gained the promotion that he sought so badly, but his hatred for Othello had already been born and now Iago sets out to destroy Othello. With Cassio having lost his post and is reputation he is distraught and turns to Iago for council. He desperately wants to regain Othello's affection and since he has no inclination of Iago's deep seeded hatred of Othello, Cassio believes that Iago will help him regain what he has lost, Iago however has other reasons for aiding Cassio. Iago can now set into motion his plan to ruin Othello by casting a suspicion in his mind that Desdemona is having an affair with Cassio. Iago tells Cassio to seek the aid of Desdemona in order to regain what he has been stripped of. He says "Our general's wife is now the general. I may say so in this respect, for that he hath devoted and given up himself to the contemplation, mark, and denotement of her parts and graces" (2.3.279-281), in saying this Iago is telling Cassio to go to Desdemona and get her to do his bidding for him to Othello. With Cassio and Desdemona now holding meetings away from Othello, Iago has the opportunity to imbed a seed of jealousy in Othello.
The first case of Iago manipulating Othello comes when Othello sees Cassio leave Desdemona when he is entering the room.
