On The Departure Of My Guest

I had a compact disc and just about every song reminded me of her. That is the way this lady felt because she found "a travel sized bottle of shampoo and a breath mint" (Kane 62) and those things reminded her of him. From the line "One travel-sized bottle of conditioning shampoo" (Kane 62), it seems to me that this person she is missing is going away on business. But why would she be doing things that reminded her of him if he was coming back? I get the feeling that he used to go on business trips and now he has gone forever and will not come back. He could also possibly be in the armed forces and going over seas. It is not a very vivid picture but I do feel that one of those two could be the reason for him leaving. Many women now days have husbands or boyfriends that leave for the military every day. I can see where that will be a hard thing for a woman to deal with. Leaving on a business trip is a totally different thing. Most woman know that the man is coming back and it sounds like Ms. Kane does not know if he will return or not. From a man's prospective, a woman leaving us can be a hard thing to deal with but we will eventually get over it. Nothing will stop us from going out and find another woman. For woman it's totally different.
Many women find many different ways to remember a loved one. Whether it be with finding little things around the house to remind them of their lost one or doing things that remind her of him, it all boils down to trying to bring back those happy memories. In her poem, Ms. Kane describes the backyard of this house. The way the chairs face the river, the fact that there is a cigarette stub in the dirt still with the taste of mint on it. Could the one she lost smoked a cigarette before he left? Perhaps he did and she is trying to remember the way he used to smoke everyday. He probably smoked in the same spot every single day. This could be one thing they did together.
