Influences Of Archaic Greek Statuary

.
Probably the most important of facet of Egyptian sculpture integrated into Greek was the fact that they were life-sized. "The size appealed to that sense for the monumental, which the Iron Age Greeks had so far expressed only in their architecture and pottery (Boardman, 18)." Also, since no evidence of Greek statues that possessed this new concept can be accurately dated before this period of contact with Egypt, Archaic Greek sculpture drew at least some influence from the Ancient Egyptian culture.
Since there was unmistakable proof of the Greek presence in Naukratis, and coupled with the Greeks characteristic curiosity, similarities showed in the resultant statuary sculpted by the Greeks. These similarities both involve the profile and the proportion of the male and female Greek kouroi and korai and the Egyptian male and female statues during this period. .
One piece of evidence of the incorporation of the characteristics of Egyptian female sculpture to a Greek kore involves the Walter's Statuette (Figure 1). First of all, although this solid-cast, bronze statue only stands only 13.6 cm. tall, which is not exactly life-sized, the stance, however, is clearly Egyptian. It has a stiff frontal pose, with straight and tightly drawn legs and feet. Also, the right arm of the figure is also stiffly vertical and held straight by her side with her hand clenched. Unfortunately, although her left arm is broken away above the elbow, it does appear drawn slightly forward and away from the body. The figure also combines details Egyptian dress. "Three decorative bands at the neckline echo a typical Egyptian-style banded collar or necklace (Benson, 2001)." Also, "although the back surface of the piece is not as well preserved as the front; it is basically smooth, and the lines that continue the bands around the neck are still visible, as well as incisions near the shoulders that resemble the "suspender" effect of the simple linen garment worn by Egyptian women (Benson, 2001).
