             When Jurgis injures his tendon he is out of work for about three months. With bills piling up the family unit suffers tremendously. He is now a damaged article. He joins many others in seeking a job. He is hired by a fertilizer plant. While working at this horrific job his family continues to suffer with poverty, death, and adultery. .
             Jurgis is sent to jail for attacking the boss of his wife for committing adultery with his wife. While in jail he is fed and housed while his family may be starving and soon homeless. He is outraged by this injustice. How could his life in jail be better than the life of his family which has freedom?.
             After being released from jail he finds that his family did indeed lose the house. He finds his wife in labor and finally finds a mid-wife to deliver the baby. Again devastation happens when both his wife and baby die. This event begins the turning point of this book.
             A wealthy woman who takes interest in the family helps Jurgis get a job in a steel mill. The job is so much better than his previous jobs that he gets his hopes up again. He starts planning for his family's future. However, good luck wasn't long lasting when his last son drowns. With the total destruction of Jurgis's immediate family he disappears.
             He wanders the country sleeping where he can and eating whatever food he finds. He works some and injures himself again. As he experiences more difficulty he again realizes that bribery and unlawfulness haunt him. He is sent back to jail where he finds a prisoner he knew from the past. This ex-con teaches Jurgis the alliance between businessmen, politicians, and criminals.
             Through more experiences he finds himself at a socialist political party. Mesmerized by the speakers discussion of working men whose labors have built this society he becomes re-motivated.
