Supplemental Feeding Of Deer In New York

Deer prefer fragmented habitat and habitat diversity; from open hardwoods and fields to thick swamps and pine forests. In the Adirondacks the habitat diversity is limited. This lack of habitat diversity and the extreme depths of snow that the Adirondacks get every winter are what keep deer populations to a minimum. The deep snow limits deer movement and keeps them from accessing food sources. Thus supplemental feeding throughout the winter months keeps deer herds high and healthy. .
The factor of deer rising to numbers over their carrying capacity due to the feeding eliminating winter kill caused by starvation is not as big of a deal as many people suggest. In past years the numbers of coyotes in the Adirondacks has been on definite rise. Also the reintroduction of wolves into the Adirondacks has also been considered. Thirdly, a primary food source of black bears in the spring is whitetail deer fawns. These factors as well as many others are limiting agents on deer populations in the Adirondacks. Therefore the supplemental feeding throughout the winter will make up for the loss of deer numbers caused by the limiting factors. .
In the Adirondacks deer move to wintering areas or deer yards when the snow levels get to 10 to 15 inches deep. Does and fawns return to the same wintering areas year after year. These wintering grounds are areas where food is plentiful through the winter. Supplemental feeding creates wintering areas for deer to come to. If the supplemental food is put out for deer at the right time of year the wintering area with the supplemental feeding works the same as a natural wintering area. Bruce Landon and other people from Bay Pond have come up with a feeding plan that has proven to be effective for several decades. Also, with supplemental feed being in one place the deer do not need to travel to get to food whereas without the feeding they must travel further throughout their wintering area to get to food which causes them to use up valuable energy as they travel through upwards of 5 feet of snow.
