Good Readers and Good Writers by Vladimir Nabokov


             As you notice in this essay, Vladimir Nabokov main point is, to become a good reader's and good writers, one must have certain skills. To be a good reader's and good writer, one should have a good memory, imagination, a dictionary, and some artistic sense. In this essay Vladimir describe much about these skill in become good at reading and writing. He also talks about how rereading is one of the important key to becoming a good reader and good writer.
             He compares and contrast, how looking at a painting and reading a book is similar but different in a way. He said, looking at a painting for the first time, one is going to have a looked at the whole image of it, but when reading a book, you don't have that same kind of image. It comes naturally after rereading for the second or third time. .
             When reading, you should try to visualize characters, and the surrounding. So, that you will get a better perspective of the author's intentions. Visualizing will gives the reader, a greater understanding of the plot and other aspect of the story. Memory is important in visualizing writing. Having a good memory will help you visualized a picture of what's going on in that one sentence or paragraph. Memory helps to keep the series of events in order. So that when u reaches the end you don't forget about the beginning. Dictionary come as helpful and useful in reading and writing, it help you, so that as you read you are less likely to be distracted by words you do not know.
             Artistic sense is the least of the important key in becoming a good reader. Having an artistic sense means to have a passion for reading. Without a passion, you will not enjoy or appreciate the reading, but you don't really have to me passionate about a writing to understand it.
