Treacher Collins Syndrome is an inherited syndrome that affects the facial structure and features. The characteristics of individuals face with TCS are very distinct. It is very common for people with TCS to have some degree of hearing loss. Theyre nostrel tubes may also be a little narrow. Some other signs of TCS is cleft lips, your eyes buring turned inward and heart problems, but those occur in the minority of the TCS population. .
The corner of the eyes slant downward because of the weak bone structure that is supporting the eyes and it alters is structure. Sometimes on the inside part of the eye does not have eyelashes. Usually peoples vision is not affected from this disease, but in rare cases when the eyes are turned inward the individual may require glasses to have perfect vision. Most of the people with TCS have normal intelligence and and development. In some cases the individuals will have a delay in development, but scientist are not sure wether or not that is realted to the hearing loss or not. It is best to detect the loss of hearing so the inidivduals speech is not affected from the hearing loss. The physical features of TCS can be so severe as to be deformed to where it affects you mentally, phyiscally, and emotionally, but it can also be so mild as to sometimes avoid diagnosis of it. It is possible for a mildly affected individual to have a child that is severly affected, so that means that all closely related family members should be checked up on and carefully emamined. Because of the nasal passages being narrow and the jaw being small it may be difficult for some individuals to breathe and that is called "sleep apnea". The breathing problems are mainly found in infants and can cause problems during surgery.
