Army Values What does it take to be a leader in the United States Armed Forces? The acronym LDRSHIP describes the values that the Army instills into its officers. The acronym stands for Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage. Loyalty is a feeling of commitment or allegiance that a person has toward his or her country. In the army loyalty is an important value because if an enlisted man did not care for his country he would have no motivation to serve. Loyalty also means that you will not betray your country in any way and you must always stay true to your country. Duty is an act or action that is required by position, law, customs, or religion. In respect to the army, the soldier has an obligation to his unit, superi

The purpose of this paper is to introduce, discuss, and analyze the topic of leadership. Specifically it will discuss what leadership is, and what makes a great leader. Leadership can be anything from a fine commander on the battlefield to a bold CEO of a floundering company. It can occur at just about any age, and it is much more than simply wielding power, as this analysis clearly shows. Great leaders are not merely born; many of them develop their leadership styles through study, trial, and error, and the experience of success. Great leaders are as concerned about others as they are with themselves, and they are always concerned with change and growth of the organization and the people around them. Many times, people confuse "management" with leadership, because managers and leaders have much in common. They both have power, they both use their power to run a business or operation effectively, and they both have other people that rely on them for information, ideas, and the d

The importance of maintaining correct protocol and Military |

The importance of maintaining correct protocol and Military bearing on and off duty, is essential because to show disrespect to an NCO when in uniform could cause disrespect among civilians about the military in general. Any disrespect towards my leaders, from team leader on up to Sergeant Major of the Army, along with the Platoon Leader on up to the Army Chief of Staff, or the President of the United States, can have a negative effect on the Morale and Welfare of those around me, junior or senior. If a Soldier who is junior to me sees my behavior, he may believe that I, being a Specialist, am right because I outrank him. Then this soldier is also doing the same things I am because he thinks he can. Now because this behavior has been passed on, the leaders will have a harder time dealing with their soldiers. Now the leader is as stressed as I am. This should include leaving non work-related issues at home, and away from the workplace because they can get in the way of performing my

What I Think of Leadership |

Leadership is a journey of discovery, not only for myself, but a discovery of other individual's potential that I also may learn from them. It is an expression of a person at his or her best whose goal is to transform something better and to develop the imagination and character other people possess. I feel that I am a unique leader in my community and school because I speak my mind honestly, always listen to what others have to say before voicing my opinion, and most importantly am a strong observer, which makes for an excellent leader. Great leadership is an activity that comes from the heart and considers the hearts of the others that he or she is working with. I have held many leadership roles throughout my school career: Vice President of National Honor Society (whos

As a class we defined a leader as one who elevates everyone around them toward the relentless pursuit of universally accepted values and embodying the values that withstand the test of time. During this course as a class and individually we have looked at and compared many leadership styles; each of us attempting to identify the style we currently use and the style we would like to develop for future leadership opportunities. As I read the assigned handouts and chapters in the Organizational Behavior Reader and Good to Great I tried to identify characteristics I currently posses and ones I would like to develop. Currently I find myself in a position which prevents me from utilizing my own leadership styles. Currently I am required to be more of a transactional leader. The organization I work in would like its leaders to assign task and be very analytical; working with others only if there is a problem with the assignment. I always make m

What is leadership? Leadership is having the ability to give guidance to those that will follow. Those that follow will help to complete the mission. Leadership is an immature science and the body of knowledge in the field has developed through a series of fits and starts. Leadership is a soft science, just as anthropology, sociology and psychology. It can not be proven exactly what it is. Leadership is an art, the skillful application of leadership behaviors beyond techniques is much the same as the skillful application of brushstrokes by a master painter. Leadership is both rational and emotional. It involves both sides of human experience. It includes actions and influences based on reason and logic as well those based on inspiration and passion. Leadership is a social process shared among all members of a group. Leadership development comes through experience. We all learn from our different experiences. Whether positive or negative, they are our tools for growth and development. W

Throughout my collegiate career, I have been blessed with the opportunity of being in the presence of exceptional and effective leaders. From these experiences, I have found that, in order to be an effective leader, it is essential for a person to be able to communicate and he/she must be humble. One might question how these two seemingly different characteristics or qualities relate to being a leader, but you must note that without these two qualities effective leadership is lost. Communication is everything. Without it, nothing would be accomplished. Because of this, it is vital that anyone assuming a leadership role be able to clearly state the objectives of the group. Whether it be a top executive guiding his subordinates or a coach directing his/her team, he/she must possess the ability spell out the intentions of the group to make certain that everyone is on the same page so that there is no ambiguity. The challenge of leadership is to sustain momentum in organisations One of the greatest challenges facing any manager or leader in organisations is to establish and maintain a focus amongst workers, employees or team members on of the needs to continually moving forward and improving the organisation. How a leader establishes and maintains this desire to continuously improve is the source of much debate amongst academics and practitioners. There are many leadership theories and models and much debate as to the best model or leadership style. Servant Leadership |

As we develop into leaders, one of the things we need to know is what it means to be a servant leader. Today such examples are greatly lacking. Some Christian leaders follow the example of the world. Christ says in Mark 10:42-43, "But Jesus called them to himself and said to them, "You know that those who are considered rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. "Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant" (Nelson). Other Christian leaders claim to be servant leaders because they obey Christ and they expect others to obey them. They use as their model the centurion whose servant Jesus healed in Luke 7:1-10. Verses 7-9 say, "Therefore I did not even think myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed. "For I also am a man placed under authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to one, "Go," and he goes; and to another, "Come," and

As one of the street team leaders for the newspaper The College Times, I am often asked to make decisions and provide input. As a leader I am responsible for my team members, and also responsible to come up with ideas and make decisions on how to maximize the distribution of the paper, as well as out promotional items. A few weeks ago, we were presented with a problem that our distribution on the campus at Arizona State University was well behind that of the different community colleges around the valley. Although ASU as more students, its tough to get the papers out, because the students seem to always be in passing, and often turn down the paper. It was decided that we needed to have a meeting between the leaders on the street team. W |
