Text Messaging Phenomenon


            Having to travel on the tube everyday with teenagers at either side of you, you notice that as soon as you come to a station that is over ground you are inundated with the "1 message received" sound by every teenage mobile phone user around you. Which brought me to the question "Why has this become such a phenomena between teenagers?.
             Text messaging has changed how teenagers use their mobile phones to communicate and co-ordinate their lives. Text messaging has provided a fun, and more convenient way for today's youth to communicate with one another. They even use text messaging to plan telephone calls. But while text messaging is on the increase, less is known about why teenagers have adopted it. Why has text messaging become such an important part of their lives and how it has become second nature to them?.
             Xerox an American research company believes that understanding why and how the teenagers of today use text messaging to communicate will help predict what technology will be required by the adults of tomorrow. Where is technology leading us? We will discover why a large percentage of text messages are sent from teenagers' own homes when landline telephones are available often at no cost to the teenager.
             Teenagers have grown accustomed to the mobile phone interface and have adapted it to their needs, using slang and as there is a character limit they have to shorten words and use many different abbreviations, which allot of teachers and researches say is bad for their grammar and English skills, we will have an interview with the head of the English department at Oxford University. We will see why adults have not taken such an appreciation as teenagers have, and how teenagers can be very secretive with the messages they receive and send. .
             As a teenager I owned a mobile phone, but the age of getting a mobile seems to be getting younger, I see 9 and 10 year olds having a mobile, we will follow a young text addict 11 year old girl and a 17 year old girl to see how much their text life changes and what their messages are about, finding how many they send a day, to why they feel that they have to send so many.
