Let the Great World Spin by Colum McCann


            Tragedy brings a greater good in its wake. In every tragic event, whether it's man made or a natural disaster, reminds humanity about generosity, courage, and compassion. With those qualities being reminded in every person brings a unity amongst feelings which connects people together. In the novel Let the Great World Spin, by Colum McCann, uses the theory of the six degree of separation by uniting people through a "steel cable" inside a web of tragic events that eventually leads the character to find hope for life again. The theory of the six degree of separation is that anyone on the planet can be connected to any other person on the planet through a chain of acquaintances. In Let the Great World Spin the world is small and revolved one another. It shows how one person is linked through a chain of correlated events. The web that links everyone together is New York and a steal reinforced cable. McCann includes this theory inside one of the biggest cities in the whole world. He shows that even in a city populated with millions of people that no matter what they are all connected. What connects everyone together? The walker, everyone character refers back to him at least once. It first starts off with Claire, who was angry with the fact that the walker is risking his life and he doesn't see how value life can be: "How dare he do that with his own body? Throwing his life in everyone's face? Making her own son's so cheap" (113). Judge Solomon, Claire's husband, who becomes the anchor point of the web of events linking them al; together by taking the cases of Tille Henderson, and the walker. .
             According to John Hick inside the ´Evil and the God of Love", he explains one of the most difficult question inside religion, Why is their evil? "Hick defends God against the charge of evil by saying that tragic outcomes in life are justified by people acting virtuously. In this manner, they develop virtues gradually.
