The Technology of Tablets

Once upon a time, tablets were pieces of stone with etchings on them. Now, a different type of tablet weighs less than a pound and can store thousands of books and materials. Technology has changed the way we access and comprehend material. Nationally, a very controversial and disputed topic is whether or not tablets should replace physical textbooks. Many educators agree, describing tablets to be a beneficial learning tool, durable, and can store a wide variety of books. Critics disagree and describe tablets to be a major distraction to students, and are fragile. .
Some educators believe that physical textbooks are superior to e-reader because they claim that physical textbooks are more convenient and less likely to distract the reader. Tim Challies, a book reviewer and co-founder of Cruciform Press believes "The e-book on the other hand, tends toward distraction. They are created to do many things well, which means that the focus is not only on the reading experience but on gaming, browsing, searching." People like Challies believe that e-books can be a major distraction to students, since they are a multimedia device that can shift the focus from the text. However, to some students the additional features can be beneficial. .
Those who favor these tablets do not see these multimedia features to be distractions. Print size and audiobooks options can be helpful and meet specific needs. Not all students have the same learning styles and are not able to comprehend the material; having multiple ways to view and manipulate the material to one's desire would increase a student's academic performance. These features enhance the learning experience without shifting the focus. Stephen Abram, an executive director of Ontario libraries, describes tablets to be customizable to fit a variety of different learning styles. He says, "Is the print too small? Make it bigger. You don't like the font? Choose a different one.
