US Steel Corporations and J.F. Kennedy

United States Steel Corporations had developed to become such gigantic industries by 1962, that the welfare of the country they operated in had much influence by their actions. Thus being so, nineteen-sixty-two complicated matters further by being an era in the midst of a recession. Therefore when steel companies raised prices by 3.5 percent or 6 dollars more a ton on April 10, 1962, the potential ramifications on the country demanded for a call of action to be made or the U.S. would sink further into turmoil. Well not a day was wasted though as on April 11, 1962 President John F. Kennedy returned with a fierce whiplash against the steel companies who lacked ".a higher sense of business responsibility for the welfare of their country.".
Within President Kennedy's arsenal of rhetoric, was a continuous stream of repetition arguing and highlighting the absurdity in an increase in steel prices by listing consequential reasons as to why the price spike is detrimental. To aid in his argument, he covers the effects it has on U.S. families and the security of the nation while mentioning that servicemen are losing lives in Viet Nam as he speaks. Additionally, he attempts at touching bases with patriotism to some degree by covering as much of the typical American Workforce as possible affected by the steels price hike. For example, from the tools and machinery price spike affecting American businessmen and farmers to the pensions of older citizens as it allows for inflation. .
Next he goes on to provide factual evidence that the steel companies are spiking prices up and trimming the workforce simply out of greed. All while appropriately offering an array of reports ranging from the Bureau of labor and Wall Street Journal to Secretary at the time, Robert McNamara. All in addition to Kennedy's firmly defensive and charismatic tone in association with the American public. It is also notable to mention Kennedy's deliberate act of labeling himself in with the general public of America when in reality, he was a highly educated and wealthy millionaire coming from a privileged family.
