Odysses's Destiny


            
             An epic is a long narrative poem that describes a hero and his journey or adventure. The epic, The Odyssey, describes Odysseus's journey home and the troubles he faces along the way. Starting out "in media res" or in the middle of things, the epic begins with Odysseus half way through his journey. Throughout his adventure, Odysseus must conquer several obstacles, which stand in his way. One might say Odysseus was destined to return home and reclaim his kingdom and achieving this destiny required the help of Athena, goddess of wisdom. Not only did Athena indirectly aid Odysseus with the Phaeacians, but also directly on Calypso's island and the dealing with the suitors.
             On the island of the Phaeacians, Athena indirectly assisted Odysseus in several ways. Upon his arrival on the Island of the Phaeacians, Athena castes a deep sleep on Odysseus in order for him to recover from his tragedy at sea. Athena then plotted for Nausica, princess of the Phaeacians, to venture near Odysseus's resting place. By giving Nausica courage to face the strange, Athena cunningly made the two acquaintances. Athena goes as far as enhancingin his appearance so that Princess Nausica will be sure to help him reach home. Moreover, the Phaeacians were great sailors and Odysseus's arrival was no coincidence. As one can see, Athena constantly stands by Odysseus, loving and supporting him.
             Athena manages to directly contribute to the achievement of Odysseus's destiny to return home and reclaim his kingdom by aiding him on Calypso's island. Calypso is a beautiful nymph goddess and sets her heart on keep Odysseus for herself. She even offers him immortality. However, it wasn't until Athena begs her father, Zeus, to force Calypso to give up Odysseus that he departs with the island. Had Athena not convinced Zeus to free Odysseus, he might have remained on the island with Calypso. Through the help of Athena, Odysseus once again takes another step in undertaking his destiny.
