Is Socioeconomic Inequality Increasing in America?
The economy is changing every day. People are receiving more and more opportunities to be able to be successful. There are many aspects that are creating some inequality among people in America, as well as creating more benefits for all. People today are making more money than they did twenty years ago. But is this true for all? How many people are doing very well and how many are doing poorly? Some say the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. Is Socioeconomic inequality increasing in America?
America is the land of opportunity. There are many independent businesses rising every day. New jobs are allowing the chance for many people to get a good job. People with dis abilities are now receiving more opportunities to get a good paying job. More and more people are receiving a good quality education. Some say there is a big inequality among the rich and the poor. Many are not looking closely at the statistics. The statistics are saying that the gap between the rich and the poor is widening. There are many different attributes that are allowing this to occur. The rise of single parent homes is one contributing factor. Many people are having childr
Many people argue that inequality is good for the economy. They say it “promotes growth for the economy.” (Gross, 2003) They seem to believe that rich people will spend the money better than poor people. They believe this because they think that rich people will save and invest their money while poor people will just spend all their money. Many believe that great inequality among the poor and the rich will do more harm than good. “ A gratuitously unequal society could create resentment and even violence.” ( Shiller, 2003) Crime could rise higher and more people in lower wage jobs could begin to strike and rebel against those controlling most of the income in America. “Social tensions and economic inefficiencies can occur.” ( Rattner, 2003) If most people living in America are poor, what good will that do for the economy. We need to fix the problem so the gap does not keep on widening. A society that has the best opportunity for all would be the best thing to do. Some measure have been taken to try to fix the income gap. New tax cuts have been tried to give more money to Americans. These new tax cuts have done more benefit to the rich than to the poor. “These tax provisions will raise the after tax income of Americans making more than one million dollars by 4.4 percent, while raising the average American worker’s income by 1.8 percent. More than 70 percent of households will receive 500 dollars or less while 800 million will receive no tax cut at all.” (Rattner, 2003) So this tax cut is not helping out the poorest people in America. In fact these tax cut are cutting many programs that do
