Our society fully accepts that there is a large, and it seems, growing problem of drinking by teenagers. Alcohol is part of Western society and the majority of Americans enjoy alcohol beverages. To pretend that young people will grow up to enter a world of abstinence is both unrealistic and irresponsible. Even religious groups strongly committed to abstinence are not very successful in maintaining it about their young people, the majority of whom drink. This is true even among students attending church supported schools (NHTSA). But how is it that many groups around the world have learned how to consume alcohol widely with almost no problems. For example, the Italians. The success of the Italians has been lead by three parts. Beliefs about the substance of alcohol, the act of drinking, and education about drinking. Within the Italian lifestyle, alcohol, is seen as neutral. It is neither a terrible poison nor it a magic substance that can transform people into things they want to be or people that want to be with. Also, the act of drinking is seen as normal. The last National law that was passed having to deal with the sale of alcohol was the “National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984.” This law was extremely effective because the states that did not move the drinking age to twenty-one were not given full federal government aids. Since then, there has been 18,251 lives saved since that law went into effect in 1984(Simpson). But what our society needs is low-cost laws that could be put through without causing any trouble to the rest of our economy.
One way to help fight against underage drinking is by changing the law in all states requiring every establishment that sells alcohol to have a two form of identification law. This would mean that in order to buy alcohol you would need to bring two forms of identification with you. If you were to be asked if you knew someone with a fake ID, almost everyone would raise their hand.
Another way to help prevent underage drinking is by making harsher punishment for the stores that sell to underage drinkers. Making a law the will fine establishment one hundred thousand dollars if they sold to underage drinkers, would definitely get the attention of many stores selling to underage drinkers. This is another low-c
