Luther and Calvin

The separation between Luther and Calvin was all based upon religion. There were two leaders at the time in charge of religion, Martin Luther (1483-1546), and John Calvin (1509-1564). Martin Luther was a German monk who taught theology a Wittenberg University, and John Calvin was a Frenchman who taught theology where he lived in Geneva, Switzerland. Religion was their primary concern, they thought that all people should have the right to read the Bible, and study the word of god. For example, "Luther and Calvin asserted that all people have the right and the obligation to read and study the Bible, for along it is the word of God" p.6; however, they had different views on how the bible and god's word should be expressed Their views were significantly different, much so that they had a tremendous impact on the colonist society. .
Luther's views were generous of the common people; they were equal in everyway if anyone decided to read. For example, his views were "argued that priest should not be considered a privileged class, separate and more holy than ordinary men and woman. All true believers are equally endowed with grace" p.6. Other words, his views were towards the average "Joe", the common man or woman. However, Calvin's views were of the tradition of Adam and Eve, and the sacrifice of Jesus, he actually believed that he or she most earn God's respect and forgiveness. Also, his views were "affirmed that the universe is controlled by neither satanic evil nor absurd chance. The universe, however it might seem to morals, is stable and divinely just because God wholly controls it" p.7. In other words, it all starts with God, God controls everything. For example, they believe "God is every where, causing every birth, every death, bountiful harvest, storms at sea, the falling of a single leaf, the movement of the smallest mote dust. The entire universe and all events within it testify to God's existence and power" p.
