Childhood Isolation

Webster's dictionary defined isolation as, to set apart from others; to place alone. Isolation has many negative affects on people such as speech problems, anger problems, and nervousness. It has become a societal issue that people are unable to communicate to many different learning types. When one is isolated they lose essential skills necessary for communication. It is necessary to examine these effects especially in cases of children. .
Cases involving children are especially important since children learn standards for the rest of life. In order to grow, children need standards that are set to live to, these standards are normally taught by parents. They include reasoning ability, manners, speech, and even things like bodily movements. Not only is ones personality learned from parents, but also from our cultural environment. When kept from ones cultural environment children lose all understanding of the teachings and makeup of society. .
Over the years there have been cases involving children that have been through these negative effects and not had these standards met for the fact that these children were kept in isolation. Anna would be one of these cases. Born to an unwedded mother in 1932, Anna was supposed to be given up for adoption. Adoption being too expensive, Anna was force to stay with her mother, under disagreement from her grandfather. His hostility led to Anna being locked in a dark attic. Growing up on minimum food and no human contact until 1938 when she was discovered by a social worker. .
The effects of this isolation hit her in the worst way. She could not speak, walk, or even feed herself. As for the standards that every human being needs in order to survive in the world Anna had none. Her face was expressionless and showed no interest in other people. Without these skills Anna did not fit into this world. She could not go to school to learn or even communicate to other children.
