Haircut - point of view
In his short story “Haircut” Ring Lardner tells a story about an awful man, but through the eyes of Whitey, the town barber. Whitey has an unusual point of view about Jim. Whitey sees Jim Kendell, the main character, as “comical” (101) and “kind of rough, but a good fella at heart” (101). When in reality Whitey did not see Jim for what he really was, a heartless, cheating, vindictive man. Whitey believes he telling a story about his friend Jim, who with his buddy Hod Meyers, “used to keep this town in an uproar” (101). Infact Whitey was telling a story about some of the horrible and mischievous pranks Jim would pull on some of the towns people. Whitey seems to be an unreliable narrator. Whitey, even being more of a town gossip then a barber, cannot get the story straight on Jim Kendell. Whitey being the narrator knows only hear-say about some of the circumstances that had occurred around the town. Whitey was not
If we would have read this story narrated by Julie or Doc Stairs then we would have received a completely different picture of Jim Kendell. Instead of being called “a card” (102) and “a character” (102), he would have been more likely to be called cruel and dangerous. We would have seen a story more about revenge from Paul who was continuously the subject of many of Jims pranks. As Whitey put it that Jim “..used to have all kinds of fun with Paul” (103). Paul also was trying to avenge the Jim’s assault on Julie. here is a great deal of dramatic irony in this short story. Dramatic irony is the difference in what a character thinks or believes and what a reader knows to be true. In the case of the short story “Haircut”
