Hockey

The National Hockey League (NHL) is by far the least watched sport of the four major sports. The NHL is unpopular with Americans because there is not a stellar American player the NHL can market to the United States. The league needs to come up with a decent marketing program for the United States. .
The National Hockey League already has a well planned out marketing scheme for their Canadian fans. The NHL markets the sport to Canadian fans through beer commercials. There are two things that Canadians love: hockey and beer. Labatts Blue commercials contain the beer playing hockey and then after the game drinking a Labatts Blue. Bud Light commercials are marketed around the "Hockey Falls in Canada" featuring two big hockey personalities, Barry Melrose and Bill Clement. Both are Canadian. .
During the 1980s the game was marketed around one player, "The Great One", Wayne Gretzky. He was born and raised in Brantford, Ontario. He is by the far the greatest ambassador hockey will ever have. He is the Michael Jordan of hockey.
The National Hockey League's Edmonton Oilers picked up Wayne after his World Hockey Association team, the Indianapolis Racers, folded along with the league. The NHL did a terrific job marketing the league around Wayne while he was in a small non-marketable city. The 1981-82 season is when it was all about Wayne and is when the NHL really started to pick up. Wayne was entering his fourth year in the league and during that year "The Great One" put forth the greatest season ever scoring 92 goals and 120 assists for 212 points. With this kind of performance, he really lifted the importance of hockey in Canada and became an international hockey icon. .
After the 1987-88 seasons, Wayne was traded to the Los Angeles Kings. This move could have been beneficial for the United States to adopt hockey as one of the great American pastimes. However, there was only one reason America didn't pick it up - basketball.
