VeriChip
VeriChip is an injectable identification chip that can be inserted under the skin of a human being to provide biometric verification. VeriChip, manufactured by Applied Digital VeriChip is an inert, encapsulated microchip that is energized and transmits its information when activated by a VeriChip reader. Because VeriChip is so small (about the size of a pen point) it is virtually undetectable and practically indestructible once inserted under your skin. The chip has a special polyethylene sheath that helps skin bond to it, so it stays in place. Since the chip has no battery, there are no chemicals to worry about and the chip never “runs down”; its expected life is up to 20 years. The chip is inserted just under the skin in the fleshy part (underneath portion) of your upper arm. The special VeriChip inserter and chip are preassembled and sterilized for your safety. The inserter is thrown away afterward. There is very little discomfort, less than “getting a shot, implanted through an injection during an outpatient procedure; requiring only local anesthesia, a tiny incision and perhaps a small adhesive bandage. It contains information about the patient's medical history which can then be obtained by passing an eternal scanner
I became interested in the implant chip as I listened to a radio conversation, regarding the abductions and killing of our children, and how we can protect them. As a mother of two the thought of someone kidnapping and doing the harmful things to my child or any child makes me sick. If the implant chip was use to make sure our children are safe than, I am all for it; providing that it’s move at adulthood. However, I personally do not want to be tracked everywhere, but with the increasing amount of vehicles with On Star devices and cellular phones equipped with Global Positioning System (GPS), I ask how long until I am constantly tracked? And who is this information going to be given to? The possibility of being tracked is an invasion of privacy. For this reason I think people should be more apprehensive about the technologies they use and consider any risks that might go along with them. I think that in the case of emergency victims who cannot relay information, such as allergies or diseases, to the doctor this is a wonderful technology. People already rely on technology inside their bodies, such as pacemakers, to keep them alive and this furthers that aspect of medical health. However, I do think it is important to be consciences of where this could take us and the potential impact of being monitored wherever we go. VeriChip was originally intended to function in much the same way a medical alert bracelet does by giving medical personnel life-saving information about a patient's history. Its potential use has been extended in recent months, however, and it is
