Drama 1 Monologue

As a freshman in high school, I was very outgoing. I was a great cheerleader, dancer, and I was very dramatic. The problem was that I wasn’t necessarily outgoing enough to perform fearlessly in front of a group of people. I had no problem whatsoever performing for cheer or dance, because the spectators were all strangers to me, except my trainers. So, when I perform for cheer or dance, I jus figure, “ Hey, I’m never gonna see these people again in my life! No biggie if I mess up!” Yet, in 9th grade, it was a whole other story.

My first day as a “scrub” was going great; No bullies, problems, or even any homework! Also, surprisingly, I enough loved all my teachers. Yet, the day wasn’t completely over. It smelled like fresh-coated paint for the first few minutes the class took to get situated. “Hello, and welcome to Drama1. I’m Mr. Martin.” The man with a very projecting voice flipped his long hair behind his shoulder and smiled. “Now, in order to stay in this class, you must perform a monologue!” He held up a stack of smooth white papers with a few paragraphs on each one. The papers looked as if they had just been copied. I imagined the warmth of the freshly Xeroxed papers in my hands as I thought, Wow, an assignment already?

I jumped out of my seat and stumbled clumsily to the dark stage. “Crystal lights!” The light turned off and suddenly a bright stage light blinded me. I squinted as the class started at me. The tips of my fingers began to sweat as
