Nazi Medical Experimentation
When one thinks of their family doctor the words that come to mind usually can be seen as caring, passionate, and helpful. Most would agree that a doctor’s place on this earth is to help care for people’s health and well-being. This rational thought is today’s prospective of a modern health provider. In the days of World War II, however, the very unfortunate saw certain doctors as Hell-bringers and Angels of Death. “The trust of a physician is sacred. This is why the practice of medicine by the doctors of the Third Reich is egregious, outrageous, and shocking. The Nazi doctors violated the trust placed in them by humanity. The most painful truth is for the most part the doctors escaped their crimes against Humanity and lived a life, unlike their victims.” (Remember 1) The victims of the horrible experimentation were selected out of the numerous prison camps and concentration camps. The Jewish, Gypsies, Homosexuals, all of their families, and whoever else the Germans saw as unworthy of life were transported in cattle cars to camps all over the German Army occupied territories. There they would be sent to do horrible, forced hard labor, put in a gas chamber and cremated, or be subjected to
The fourth main part is the experimentation of people with physical differences, not just race. Josef Mengele, also known as the Angel of Death, was especially interested in the experimentation of twins. He dealt with mostly children’s experimentations eighteen and younger. He wanted to know how to get multiple births for a quicker repopulation of the German people around the world (Lifton 218). The very young often referred to him as “Uncle Mengele,” and were not afraid because he would bring them candy, toys, and clothing. He Various surgeries were performed on the twins without anesthetics. Organ removal, castration, amputation, and operations on the spine and brain are just to name a few (Remember 3).Once one twin was dead the other twin was usually terminated by an injection into their heart. Often they would kill both in the same method just to hide what they had done. But the experiments did not end with the death of the twins. Dissection of the corpses for final medical analysis is well documented by Lifton. “One day, Mengele brought chocolate and special clothes. The next day a SS man, on Mengele’s instructions, took away two children, who happened to be my favorites: Guido and Nino, aged four. Two, perhaps three days later the SS man brought them back in a frightening condition. They had been sewn together like Siamese twins. The the atrocious medical experiments brought on by the Nazi medical doctors against their will. In They tested pharmaceuticals and illnesses on victims to see what sicknesses and diseases people were immune to and what medicines could be used to treat them. The illnesses included the contagious diseases malaria, typhus, tuberculosis, typhoid, yellow fever, and hepatitis (USHMM 1). The contagious disease ward was called Block 20 in the Auschwitz death camp. Prisoners were given injections of different diseases to observe the effects it had on them. There was a controlled group who received no medication for the disease and were just left to die while the process was being recorded. The other group was given a series of different experimental medicinal drugs that could help them or, in the majority of the time, harm them by causing vomiting, blindness, or death from the toxicity (International 14,15). Incubation period, rapid symptoms, course of the disease, and place of injection were all documented and studied to find solutions for the SS soldiers who had the diseases (International 125). They would sometimes put mysterious injections that even the doctors themselves did not know what was into patients. Often they caused severe pain and were injected into the spine and spinal tap without any anesthetics given (Tripod 5). Patients were subjected to breathing in different kinds of toxic gases, such as mustard gas, to find anecdotes for the after effects (USHMM 2). the basis of ostensible hereditary worth.” (Lifton 24) Eugenics has no real scientific standings. He wanted the Aryan or Nordic race to be free of all hereditary diseases and possible birth defects so he could repopulate the world with the perfect race. He wanted everyone to be purified with blonde hair and blue eyes and a tall height. Hitler himself did not fit this profile of the so-called master race and yet he was trying to breed a culture that did. Anyone who didn’t meet the race profile were to be “clean
