Women's Correction

Many female offenders are usually charged with drug related crimes. Even one out of three women in prison are in there because of drug related crimes. For the women that don't have to go to prison they are considered low risk offenders. With the label of "low risk" women are diverted from the criminal justice system though some type of community resource program. The problem isn't the fact that these women aren't going to prison, the problem is their treatment. Being low risk the women are not supervised, as they should be. Low risk offenders are only required to do the bare minimum, this usually means a few sessions of treatment, and a few hours in rehab. Nothing any average person can not do. But what we must learn is that low risk usually means low commitment. Low commitment plus the special needs of women contribute to the problems that women face in the community. .
Another problem is that all of our laws and regulations are based on a male ideology. Many people back then thought it would be ok to just add the word women in every rule. But we now know that kit doesn't work that way. Women and men are totally different and the need to be regulated differently. Great emphasis on treatment and attention are bases on male ideology. Therefore we need to concentrate on the special needs that female offenders require. Interdependence, attachment, and support should be a critical issue for us to address. .
To solve this problem that women face in the community I would increase supervision on low risk offenders. I want them to know even though they are low risk they still have to prove to me that they have changed. I would concentrate on education, and try to get them some vocational skills that they can use to get out of the "pink collar ghetto." (Women being stuck in lower status paying jobs) I want to give them something that they can use for as long as they can remember.
