Women's Correction

Many female offenders are usually charged with drug related crimes. Even one out of three women in prison are in there because of drug related crimes. For the women that don’t have to go to prison they are considered low risk offenders. With the label of “low risk” women are diverted from the criminal justice system though some type of community resource program. The problem isn’t the fact that these women aren’t going to prison, the problem is their treatment. Being low risk the women are not supervised, as they should be. Low risk offenders are only required to do the bare minimum, this usually means a few sessions of treatment, and a few hours in rehab. Nothing any average person can not do. But what we must learn is that low risk usually means low commitment. Low commitment plus the special needs of women contribute to the problems that women face in the community.

Another problem is that all of our laws and regulations are based on a male ideology. Many people back then thought it would be ok to just add the word women in every rule. But we now know that kit doesn’t work that way. Women and men are totally different and the need to be regulated differently. Great

The development of a centralized data base system has greatly improved and expanded San Diego Community corrections. With all the agencies working together they can keep the offenders on track. The public as well as the private sector can access this information to be better informed. This type of system saves the agency a lot of time because they would know whom to call to get the right assistance. For example a police officer stops a person whom the officer think is under the influence. The officer pulls up the record, and finds that the person is in drug rehab. He would then call the person in charge of the community correction center and inform them. This saves time and money, because before the officer would bring the offender to the station and book them. Then it takes time to find out where the offender belongs. This is a good idea; I am surprised it wasn’t adopted a long time ago.

The recommendations of San Diego’s Community based punishment plans have been disgust in class they are; the chief probation officer must coordinate community based punishment and provide centralized intake process, they must create an integrated system of community based process options that coordinates resources and programs, they must also adopt instruments to access risk to public safety and treatment needs, they must insure funding for community based programs by using exciting resources more effectively, they must develop and use a comprehensive media strategy to educate public and an option in community based punishment and policy makers, they must also provide ongoing evaluation and assessment programs, balancing the community based punishment with treatment needs of offenders, also to provide AOD recovery and aftercare for adults and juvenile throughout the criminal justice system, developing management information system that can be assessed b
