In The Koran, Sura four is solely devoted to speaking out against women and showing that women are to be owned and controlled by man. There are several parts in this Sura, which could lead one to believe that women possess the rights equal to men, but the negative attitude outweighs the positive in many people’s minds. Take these few lines in to context from this Sura: “ Give orphans (girls) the property which belongs to them. Do not exchange their valuables for worthless things or cheat them of their possessions; for this would surely be a great sin. If you fear that you cannot treat orphans with fairness then you may marry other wom

Later in this Sura, The Koran goes on to instruct men, “ If any of your women commit fornication, call in four witnesses from among yourselves against them; if they testify to their guilt confine them to their houses till death overtakes them or till God finds another way for them” (The Koran 4: 1430). This excerpt compared to the one above proves that men are allowed to have inferiority in this religion. Men can marry and have sex with up to four wives as mentioned above, however if “your women” has sex with others she shall be confined to her house until death. This seems to be quite an inequitable policy. What men can do, and what women can do, in terms of marrying and sex seems to be drastically deranged. The man can openly practice fornication, while the women cannot. This is a policy that shows that The Koran has different views towards women then it does men.

The Koran, like most of the world’s religions and cultures, downplays the rights and roles of women. This traditional thought has been around since the first days of recorded life and has lasted through the present.
