This enhances the reader’s terror level because if it were set during the day you would just think of a spy, not a murderer. “To suspect, every night, just at twelve, I looked in upon him while he slept.” This gives the reader a real eerie feeling because it is set at midnight and the narrator is a very suspicious individual.
