Families-Lilo and Stitch essay
Everywhere around the world, in every different culture, people are grouped into families. The word family can be defined as a group of people bound together over time, because of mutual consent, birth and or adoptions/ placement or simply people who consume responsibilities for one other. As a result of this broad definition of the family, there are several different definitions of what a family really is. For example, the nuclear family exists and consists of a Father, Mother and their kin. This is what we call the norm in Canada. From here different families may branch off into blended families (divorced parents with children), extended families (relatives living with married couples and their children), and lone-parent/ single parent families. In each of these families there are ways of functioning daily so that each member feels that their needs are fulfilled. The six functions of the family as per The Vanier Institute of the Family can be shown in any of these different families. A perfect example of a family structure that is not generally common in our society, is the one shown in the movie Lilo and Stitch. Sisters Nani and Stitch were separated from their Mother and Father suddenly when they died in a car accident. Nani,
Eventually both Nani and Lilo begin to see the problems within their family. Nani sees that she is failing as a parent, and needs to show Lilo proper care. The next day, Nani decides that the first step for progress would be to find Lilo a friend. Thus, it would teach her to socialize with others and teach her some responsibility. This is where Nani shows a positive step in the functions of the family with the addition of a new member through adoption. Nani takes Lilo to choose a new dog. Lilo is thrilled and names the dog Stitch. Little do they both realize that Stitch is not a dog but instead an alien, who is need of discipline also. That same day Mr. Bubbles returns, this time to find that Nani has lost her job, which proves she is failing to produce, consume and distribute goods and services within her family. He finds that this new dog is menace to their society and demands that Nani turn both Lilo and Stitch into “fine, upstanding model citizens of society” or else he would be back to take Lilo away for good. Nani realizes here that it is now up to her to fix her family or else it would indeed be broken for good. Nani, Lilo and Stitch are a family, and although the family is a broken family, “It’s still good,” according to Stitch. This is probably the best message throughout the movie because it shows everyone in the world that no matter who you are and what kind of family you have, it is still a family who shows a lot of love and that is all that matters. These three characters show love and appreciation for one another. They look out for one another and depend on one another. My definition of family is the same. I am lucky to say that I live in a nuclear family, but I know what it means to say that someone who is not related to me by blood, is still family. I think it is important for people especially children to know that if y
