Legalize Weed

For years, the dangers of marijuana have been drilled into our heads. The fact of the matter is alcohol (a legal drug), is far more dangerous than this outlawed drug. The legalization of marijuana could significantly benefit the public good. I will explain the "dangers" of marijuana and the possible benefits of its legalization in this paper.
Contrary to popular belief, marijuana is a less dangerous drug than our government and right-winged politicians have previously preached. In fact, in the United Kingdom, it has been proposed to change marijuana from a class B drug to a class C drug because it is far less destructive than the class it is currently in represents. Alcohol is in fact more dangerous for humans than marijuana. It is nearly impossible for one to overdose on marijuana and die. Alcohol poisoning kills more people every year than all illegal drugs combined. An analysis on deaths in the United States from 1971 to 1998 has shown that of all illegal drug related deaths, marijuana is responsible for 0.000054% of all deaths. Out of the 44,727 drug related deaths (which include glue sniffing, use of opiates, etc.), 23 were related to marijuana (meaning that marijuana was present either at time of death or in the system). To help put this number into perspective, in the same timeframe 30,150 people have died from choking on food while 378,960 people died from alcohol related circumstances. With statistics like these, it is a wonder that we still have this substance prohibited. Marijuana has even been hailed as one of the safest therapeutic substances known to man. .
One big misconception that many people use against marijuana is the fact that it is a "Gateway Drug". Study after study has found that this claim about marijuana was highly inconclusive. There is no evidence that trying marijuana will lead to using more potent and harmful drugs. Marijuana is the most popular illegal drug used in the United States.
