In June of 1989 a tragic historical event in china shocked the world. A well-organized group of college age students demonstrated against the Chinese Communist government. They wanted a form of democratic government. This essay gives a summary of the events that took place before, during, and after this tragic historical event. The student’s demonstration of June 4, 1989, was not the first protest in the 1980s. The student’s started demonstrating their dissatisfaction with Chinese government, late 1985 in Beijing and again in Shanghai on December 23, 1986. The students continued to gather in Tiananmen Square days after the memorial for Hu Yaobang. The Chinese party leadership hard-liners started to aggressively press the students and conciliatory leaders with-in it’s own party to end these demonstrations. On June 3, 1989, the Chinese government grew impatient with progress of negotiations with students. The Chinese leadership initiated use of force by its police force resulting in a large, disorganized confrontation with protesters. The Chinese police fired tear gas on the student crowds and the crowds retaliated by stoning the police. This started a larger chain reaction by the Chinese government, ultimately leading to the use of force by heavily equipped military soldiers with large tanks, armored personnel carriers, and automatic weapons. By the afternoon of June 4th the Chinese police and military forces massacred an estimated two to three thousand civilians.
