She always depended on the American man she was with, who seems to make all the decisions for her. She basically eat out of his hand. For example, she says: “What should we drink? Could we try it?” The girl could not even choose a drink she wanted without asking the American man. There was not a single trace of challenge in her voice no matter what the American man said. She could almost pass for a human pet that does everything the master commands. Although the girl’s behavior and her attitude toward the American man suggest that she was very timid and unconfident in reality this was not the case. For example the girl was very immature and the American man on the other hand seemed well refined. Most readers get this impression in the beginning of the story, but toward the end you come to realize the true situation. The American ma
During the initial reading of the story the girl also seems to be very dependent on the American man, but after a closer examination of the text we find evidence showing otherwise. It is true the American man makes a lot of small decisions for the girl, such as where to sit and what to drink. The girl though makes all the big decisions in this story. She chooses to keep the baby, probably making the biggest decision in her life. “We can go everywhere. No, we can’t. It isn’t ours any more. It’s ours. No it isn’t. And once they take it away, you never get it back.” This shows that the girl decided to keep the child. She is now referring not only to her self and the man, but also their child. During their conversation the girl also stands up in the middle of it and walks away to the train station, for once showing her independence from the American man. The girl indicates that she can survive on her own without the man’s help. She makes another big decision in letting go of the American man. “I realize, the girl said. Can’t we maybe stop talking?” Here she is not only showing independence, but also being a little rude. She simply interrupted the conversation, obvious indi
