“Our theories are based on experience … and not just fabricated out of thin air or thought up over the writing desk.”-Freud(1) Sigmund Freud was born on May 6, 1856, in the small rural town of Freiberg, which is now in Czechoslovakia. He was the oldest of three boys and five girls. The family lived in Freiberg until 1859, when the family first moved to Leipzeg then to Vienna. Sigmund’s family was a quite poor Jewish family and was forced to live in crowded apartment. Sigmund’s father, Jacob Freud, was 49 years old when he was born. Jacob was a wool merchant that only made enough money to support he and his family. Jacob Freud was previously married, and in this marriage he had two older sons. Sigmund’s mother, Jacob’s second wife, was only twenty years old when she gave birth to baby Sigmund. Sigmund had to older half brothers and both got along quite well with young Sigmund.(2)

Freud made a significant contribution to his psychoanalytic theory by coming up with a model of the stages of psychosocial and psychosexual development from birth through adulthood. This provides easy access and interpretation for understanding the key developmental characteristics of various stages of life. Doctors, counselors, parents and teachers can use this model to better understand the child and how it’s progressing amongst society.

Conflict of either loving or hating the opposite sex. Male Phallic Stage is known as Oedipus complex and it involves the mother as a love object for the young boy. The female phallic stage is known as Electra Complex and it involves the young girls strive for her fathers love an approval. How the parents respond to this stage verbally and non-verbally has an impact on sexual attitudes and feelings as that child develops.(9)

The Superego- “The superego develops from the ego and is the moral code, norms, and values the child has acquired.”(8) This is the stage that is presented to children most often in cartoons. When a cartoon character has a miniature devil on one shoulder and a small angel on the other, this is your conscious. One must decide what is right from wrong. At this stage the child learns the feelings of guilt and shame. The superego represents the traditional values of society, handed down from parents to child. It tries to stop the id impulses and persuade the ego to be perfect. The reward for the superego stage is pride, love as the punishments are guilt and shame.(7)
