Leisure and Self-Sacrifice

Rest, toil, sleep, work, leisure, worry, serenity; these are qualities of great Heroes. Nearly all civilizations consider a dimension of human potentiality which is able to achieve greatness by becoming a Hero. The western and Eastern cultures each encompass their own individual and distinct conceptions of “The Hero.” What then is truly considered a hero is only a matter of perception. The Chinese culture conceptualizes a hero as being restful, serene, and free of thoughts. In contrary, a western hero is traditionally viewed to be restless, bustle, and strong. As different as they are, heroes of the western and eastern worlds, both try to achieve greatness beyond all. Through any means, may through attaining a free mind, or through self sacrifice, heroes, always achieve greatness. Ultimately all heroes attain immortality, recognition, and superiority. Clearly then, conceptions of a hero and achieving greatness, are at times parallel, and at other times divergent, within cultures. Consequently what creates a hero is only the perception what a hero is and does.

Modern western heroes are teachers, helpers, and protectors. Traditionally Western heroes were those with long swords and shining armors, who single handedly defeated an entire army of men. Today the same is true. A restless soldier who sacrifices his life for his country is considered to be a true American hero. A fireman who rescues a baby, and risks his own life, is a real champion. Here, the hero is not a carefree and sleepy man. In fact, sleep and a carefree mind are signs of laziness. Brave and restless heroes of the west can be seen in movies, books, and television. Masculine figures such as Rocky, Rambo, and Conan the Conqueror, are great example of traditional western heroes. These men are anything but carefree and restful. They are brave, valiant, strong, and are never scared to die. Death is then a hallmark of a western hero. If a valiant swordsman dies for a good cause, he is revered forever. Although fictional, these views are nevertheless the ongoing perceptions of a true western hero. So here, a man does not achieve immortality through body or soul. He gains acknowledgment for the rest of time. In this way he stays immortal, not physically or spiritually, but in memory, and is recognized eternally.

2. A person noted for feats of courage or nobility of purpose, especially one who has risked or sacrificed his or her life: soldiers and nurses who were heroes in an unpopular war.
