The Renaissance began in Italy in the 12th and 13th centuries. Many aspects of life during this time period differed from those of the Middle Ages, such as the way people saw themselves in society. One of the major changes brought about by the Renaissance was the rise of individualism. People in the Middle Ages saw themselves as part of a race, family, or other general group. They never believed that their personal achievements held any significance until the Renaissance emerged. Throughout the 12th century in Italian history, people’s thoughts changed. People’s mindsets towards their own status, the rebirth of intellectual practices, and the uprising of several new concepts all were changes which distinguish the Renaissance from the 1000 years of the Middle Ages. As people saw themselves as more important, they began to discover other areas of life in which they sought to improve, such as art and literacy. Within a period of a few hundred years, the Europeans took many points of view towards society, and this sudden change in interpretation leads many to believe that the Renaissance and the Middle Ages are two discrete times in the history of the world.

The sudden revival of learning and literature is another aspect that supports the idea that the Renaissance was separate from, and not just the high point of the Middle Ages. Writers in 15th century Europe did not see themselves as a part of the Middle Ages. They insisted that the Middle Ages was a dormant period as far as the advancement of literature goes, and that the rebirth took place afterwards, in the Renaissance (Doc 1). A large rebirth of learning also took place in the Renaissance. Renaissance men such as Leonardo daVinci took an interest in several subjects, such as anatomy, astronomy, mathematics, and the way things worked (Doc 6). Universities, or groups of scholars studying together, were erected throughout Europe beginning in the 12th century. As the universities spread to France, Britain, and Spain, so too did the spread of learning (Doc 8). Also, scientists proved numerous new theories not only by previous work and discoveries, but by their personal observations and research (Doc 7).
